Oxcon was engaged by Auckland Transport to deliver the Heather Street Boardwalk as an unsolicited design and build, providing Parnell Station with a fully accessible, mobility-compliant entrance and completing one of the last outstanding accessibility gaps on Auckland's rail network.

Working with preferred design partners Novare Structural Design and Andy O'Sullivan Geotechnical, we developed an innovative ground screw foundation solution that enables efficient construction on steep, undulating terrain immediately adjacent to the live rail corridor using small machinery. It is this design innovation that allowed the project to progress within Auckland Transport's fixed budget.

The 130m timber boardwalk traverses a complex embankment corridor shared with Healthy Waters, Watercare, KiwiRail, and One NZ assets, requiring careful coordination throughout design and construction. We managed the full project lifecycle, completing structural and geotechnical design, obtaining approval from AT's Design Review Panel, securing Auckland Council building consent, and gaining KiwiRail design sign-off, before commencing construction.

The Heather Street Boardwalk demonstrates Oxcon's ability to identify opportunities, develop cost-effective technical solutions, and manage complex design and build programmes from concept through to construction within live rail environments.
