Oxcon was engaged to rehabilitate and protect the Waikowhai Park landfill site, delivering a broad scope of infrastructure and environmental improvements while maintaining public access and preserving the park’s amenity.
Key elements of the project include included:
- A 30m basalt seawall and steps were constructed to reinforce the coastline against erosion and improve public access.
- 20 timber piles (350mm SED poles, up to 7m long) were installed for slope retention and structural stability in a high-risk landfill environment.
- Construction of multiple timber retaining walls, road resurfacing, and repairs to stabilise park access routes.
- Installation of emergency stormwater diversion systems, subsoil drains, and basalt-lined swales to mitigate erosion and manage runoff.
- Working atop historic landfill material, the project required strict sediment control, geotechnical monitoring, and site remediation strategies.
Navigating tight access constraints and challenging ground conditions, we successfully delivered the works while enhancing the park’s ecological and recreational value.
