The SH1 Mangatoetoenui Bridge Replacement was a fast-tracked project requiring the complete removal and reconstruction of a one-span steel girder and timber deck bridge in just six weeks. The new structure features steel girders, a combination of precast and in-situ decking, and precast backwalls and retaining walls.

Operating under an aggressive programme, the team successfully executed major milestones, including the removal of the existing bridge, installation of four 18m steel girders with bracing and a transom beam, and completion of the reinforced concrete deck. Detailed programming ensured rapid progress, with stitch pours, backfill preparation, and flowable fill placement progressing seamlessly. Road widening, drainage upgrades, and asphalt surfacing were completed ahead ofschedule, with the final guardrail installation and road marking allowing for an on-time reopening to traffic.

The existing steel girders and bracing were carefully removed for future reuse by NZTA.
