This project involved the construction of a 22-meter dual-lane road and pedestrian bridge over one of Auckland’s busiest rail networks, replacing the Sarawia Street level crossing to improve safety and transport efficiency. The scope included 600m of new road, 300m of retaining walls, high-quality balustrading, pedestrian pathways, and iwi artwork installations.

Access was a major challenge, with only two entry points, requiring carefully coordinated logistics and collaboration with KiwiRail.

The team successfully managed unexpected ground conditions, service clashes, and client-supplied material delays, proactively resolving issues to keep the project moving. Timber barriers and slew limiters were installed to allow safe work adjacent to rail operations, while an alternative StoneStrong block retaining wall design saved over $500K. The project was delivered to a high-quality finish, earning commendation in Auckland Transport’s final evaluation of its safety, environmental compliance, and stakeholder engagement efforts.
