Works include 1,060m of new basalt seawall and 375m of an artificial rock reef, new rock revetments, and the construction of New Zealand’s first artificial saltmarsh habitat. Additional works included stormwater upgrades, new stair access, resurfacing of roads and carparks, and soft and hard landscaping. The site, surrounded by recreational facilities and sports clubs, required continuous stakeholder coordination to ensure uninterrupted public access.
Challenges included securing a compliant rock supply, managing sensitive marine environments, and adapting to unstable foreshore conditions. We developed a land-based access track as an alternative to a marine-based haul road, reducing environmental risks and accelerating completion.
