This project is a critical infrastructure upgrade designed to improve safety and traffic flow along a busy section of SH1 south of Whangarei. Works included wick drains and preloading, complex ground improvement and large diameter deep piling as well as the construction of a new 66m three-span super-tee bridge over the Otaika Creek, raised 1.8m higher than the previous structure to mitigate future flood risks.

Additional upgrades include southbound lane extensions, intersection realignments, retaining walls, scour protection, and a shared path to improve pedestrian and cyclist access. With significant traffic management requirements, including deep drainage installation under full road closures, and a high specification pavement the project has required a coordinated approach to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

Operating adjacent to live traffic, a major waterway, and an ecologically sensitive area, the project team has implemented strict environmental controls, receiving positive feedback from council compliance teams and Mana Whenua for proactive management. Complex structural assembly and heavy lifting operations have been carried out using multiple crane configurations, while architecturally designed barriers and balustrades have been completed to a high standard.
